Abstract

The conservative treatment of Class II malocclusion through distalization of maxillary molars with intraoral appliances has demonstrated excellent results, with a small degree of side effects but with minimal need for patient cooperation. Especially when using these devices, which have this degree of undesirable effects, one of the major goals of orthodontic treatment is to achieve ideal mesiodistal axial tooth inclinations to allow a better distribution of the occlusal forces through the correct interproximal contacts. The most common complementary exam that allows evaluation of the mesiodistal axial inclination of the teeth and the parallelism of the roots before, during and after orthodontic treatment is the panoramic radiography. Objectives: To evaluate the mesiodistal axial tooth inclination measurements of Class II patients treated with the Jones Jig distalizer followed by fixed orthodontics, and compare them with those from a historical control group of patients with normal occlusion. Material and Methods: The retrospective sample will consist of 80 panoramic radiographs. The experimental group will be composed by 60 panoramic radiographs of 20 patients, divided between three treatment times: T0-Initial; T1-Post-distalization and T2-Removal of the fixed orthodontics. The historical control group will consist of 20 panoramic radiographs of 20 patients. All radiographs will be digitized by the scanner ScanMaker i800 and the analysis of axial tooth inclinations will be performed through two reference lines drawn in anatomical structures of interest and the long axis of the teeth with aid of the software Dolphin Imaging 11.5. The mesiodistal axial inclinations of the control group and the three treatment times of the experimental group will be obtained, followed by statistical comparisons between the results obtained.
