Abstract

There is an association between tooth movement and the development of buccal bone dehiscence and gingival recession. Objective: The aim of this study will be to assess the thickness and level of buccal and lingual alveolar bone plate in mandibular incisor region in patients whose orthodontic treatment caused a significant buccal movement of the mandibular incisors, in comparison to patients whose treatment maintained the initial inclination of the lower incisors or moved them toward lingual. Methods: Cone beam computed tomography scans (i-Cat, Hartsfield, PA, USA) will be performed after orthodontic treatment in 30 Class I or II patients treated nonextraction with lower incisors protrusion greater than 5mm (Group I) and in 30 patients with Class I and II malocclusions whose orthodontic treatment did not changed the initial position of the lower incisors or moved them toward lingual (Group II-Control). Patients of Group II will be matched according to age, sex, growth pattern and sagittal relationship with patients of Group I. In CT images, the thickness and level of buccal and lingual bone plate will be measured by a digital method using Dolphin 3D software (Dolphin Imaging Sciences, Chatsworth, Calif., USA). Intergroup comparison will be performed using independent t test, with a significance level of 5%. (AU)
