Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible relationship between the topography of the mandibular canal and patient characteristics such as facial profile, skeletal class and sex. Cone-beam computed tomography images of 180 patients will be classified according to facial profile (mesofacial, brachyfacial and dolichofacial) and skeletal class (Class I, II and III). In all images, the right and left mandibular canals will be assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative analysis will consist of the classification of the mandibular canal curvature as linear, spoon-shape, elliptic arch or turning curve. For quantitative analysis, four measurements will be performed in the region of the first and second lower molars: mandibular canal diameter, buccal and lingual bone thickness, and distance from the mandibular canal roof to the root apex. After exploratory and descriptive analysis of the data, the chi-square test will be used to evaluate the association between the mandibular canal curvature classification and facial types, skeletal classes and sexes. The measurements obtained will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test for comparisons between the studied factors. The significance level will be 5% (± = 0.05). It is expected with this study to verify whether the facial profile, skeletal class and sex influence the mandibular canal topography.
