Breast cancer in women: characterization of cases included in the hospital-based cancer registries of São Paulo state between: 2000 and 2015

Abstract

Objectives: To describe sociodemographic, clinical and anatomopathological characteristics of breast cancer cases in women included in the Hospital-based Cancer Registry (HCBR) of the Oncocentro Foundation of São Paulo State (FOSP, in Portuguese) and to investigate factors associated with clinical stage at diagnosis. Material and methods: The study design will be a series of cases. The sample will consist of approximately 80,000 women with breast cancer diagnosed between 2000 and 2015 and included in the HCBR-FOSP, an agency that aggregates data from HCBR from 77 hospitals in the São Paulo State. The outcome will be stage at diagnosis (stage I-II versus stage III-IV). The explanatory variables will be: age, skin color/race, educational level, marital status, place of residence, distance from place of residence place of treatment, time intervals between first medical visit-diagnosis-first treatments, among others. This study is part of the project "Survival and prognostic factors of patients with breast cancer in the São Paulo State" submitted to the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Botucatu Medical School, UNESP. The study will follow the ethical precepts of the Resolution number 466/2012 of the National Health Council. Proposed data analysis: First we will perform descriptive analysis. Subsequently, bivariate and multivariate analysis (logistic regression) will be performed. Expected results: We expect that some characteristics of breast cancer patients (eg. clinical staging) have changed over time. We also believe that women with low educational level have tumors in more advanced stages.
