Abstract

Planning multifunctional and sustainable landscapes requires the understanding of the conditions that allow the provision of ecosystem services. However, the underlying mechanisms linking biodiversity and ecological processes to ecosystem service provision are still poorly explored, as well are the effects of landscape structure on those relationships. In this project, we intend first to investigate the relationships between landscape structure and coffee plantation productivity, through the effects of landscape on biodiversity and on the provision of two regulation services (pollination and pest control). For that, we have a broad set of data obtained in a thematic project that I am coordinating. Second, we also want to contribute by proposing new conceptual and analytical models for the analysis of ecosystem services in complex landscapes based on matrix and socio-ecological networks. This research relies on a broad collaborative network of researchers from ten different countries who are already working together through a networking project and a synthesis group. The overall results of this project will contribute to theoretical and analytical research progress on the provision of ecosystem services, with broad potential application for managing and planning multifunctional landscapes.
