Abstract

Climate change is possibly the biggest challenge humanity has ever encountered. In the coming decades regions will face climate fluctuations that will endanger the supply of diverse ecosystem services that are essential for human survival. In this context, this study aims to evaluate the ability to regulate the supply of ecosystem services through landscape management considering extreme climate variations. We will investigate how landscapes with different compositions and configurations provide important regulation ecosystem services: water availability, carbon accumulation and seed dispersal. This analysis will be made within the context of the Continuum Cantareira that aggregates Conservation Units of Sustainable Use and Integral Protection, allowing us to evaluate the role of these Units in the provision of these resources. Using new sampling technologies, which allow the collection of large amounts of data simultaneously, accurately and with high temporal resolution, together with the modeling of spatiotemporal dynamics to simulate probable future scenarios, we will assess the resilience of the system in supplying these services in multifunctional landscapes. These results are fundamental for planning actions to adapt to global change in order to maintain landscapes that guarantee water security and productivity in rural areas, as well as the conservation of biodiversity and the proper functioning of ecosystems.
