Abstract

The high concern with recurring environmental issues, especially global warming, coupled with a concrete search for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere, has leveraged the research and development of technologies to capture and store CO2. Solid adsorbent materials are being used with the aim of adsorbing polluting gases. One of these materials is activated carbon from biomass, which has a favorable economic accessibility when compared to synthetic and commercial adsorbent materials. Activated carbons will be prepared and characterized from the lignocellulosic biomass of sugarcane bagasse (Saccharum officinarum). The sugarcane bagasse will be used as adsorbent in the capture of CO2. For this, the pyrolysis of the biomass will be previously performed, and the chemical activation of the carbons will be done with the potassium hydroxide (KOH). The objective of the work will be the capture of CO2 by adopting activated carbon of biomass as adsorbents, in addition to the characterization of these products. In order to capture the carbon dioxide, the thermogravimetric data will be obtained using a thermogravimetric analyzer. The obtained data will be worked on the second-order kinetic model, obtaining the adsorbent gas adsorption concentration. The specific surface area (BET method), pore size and volume (BJH method), adsorption analyzer and surface area will also be obtained. For characterization, thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with X-ray dispersive energy (EDX) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) will be performed.
