Abstract

This research is motivated by the interest in understanding the grounding of a new model of normative criticism developed by Rahel Jaeggi in her book Critique of Life Forms [Kritik von Lebensformen]. With this objective, we will use the analysis of the concept of immanent critique as the guiding thread for the work, trying to explain how the author, from this concept, is located within the philosophical field of Critical Theory. Since Jürgen Habermas, the thinkers who have been involved in this field have been preoccupied with identifying normative criteria for the realization of social criticism, and all of them sought to take up the philosophies of their predecessors and to deepen, unfold or refute their ideas. Thus, according to these criteria, Jaeggi takes up the concept of immanent critique, widely used since the beginning of the so-called Critical Theory first generation and develops it in its own way. It is therefore necessary to investigate how Jaeggi seeks, on the one hand, to insert herself in the tradition of Critical Theory and, on the other, to differentiate herself from the representatives of the same tradition, like Habermas, especially with regard to immanent criticism. With this study, we intend to contribute to the understanding of an important new representative of the new generation of critical theory while, at the same time, to describe an interpretive framework of one of the most important concepts for this line of contemporary philosophical thought.
