Abstract

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease resulting from a complex polymicrobial infection, leading to the destruction of periodontal tissues. Osteoporosis is a chronic and multifactorial disease that results from a skeletal disorder that promotes bone fragility by reducing its mass. Several experimental studies have demonstrated that Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) stimulation can promote osteogenesis and potentially increase bone mineralization and also reduce acute and chronic inflammation. This study will have as objective to evaluate by means of histomorphometry the influence of PEMF on periodontal disease in rats with and without estrogen deficiency. Sixty female adult rats randomized into two experimental groups, Sham (n = 30) and Ovariectomized (n = 30), will be submitted to the induction of periodontal disease or induction of periodontal disease accompanied of PEMF therapy. After sacrificing the region of interest will be histologically processed for the histomorphometric analysis of the furca region and interproximal area between the first and second molars of the animal. The data obtained will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test, with a 5% significance level.
