Evaluation of tooth fracture in relation to the presence or absence of amalgam restorations: a case-control study

Abstract

The purpose of this case-control study is to evaluate whether dental fractures are associated with the presence or absence of silver amalgam restorations. As a secondary objective, factors that may be related to the fracture of the tooth (parafunction habits, wear facets, and the presence of lining material) will be assessed. For this, patients presenting fractured teeth, with or without the presence of silver amalgam restorations, will be enrolled. Fractured teeth will represent the case group. For the control group, teeth without fracture with or without amalgam restorations in amalgam will be selected according to parameters like age, gender, and tooth group, defined in the case group. If restoration is present, the type of material, extension of the restoration (mesiodistal and buccolingual) and extension of the fractured cusp will be assessed. For the case group, composed by fractured teeth, the dental remnant will be measured. Teeth from both the control and case groups will be radiographed (for pulp evaluation), casted, and photographed, for visual analysis of the cavity/restoration. The fractures and restorations will be evaluated by two calibrated examiners. The data will be evaluated by chi-square test (5%) and Odds Ratio.
