Abstract

Analysing two movies by architect and urbanist Ermínia Maricato as starting points, "Fim de Semana" (1975) e "Loteamento Clandestino" (1979), this research intends to approach discussions concerning city production and the way of living of the poor in soon-to-be main South American metropolis, São Paulo. It aims to take back diverse elements that were beginning to take part in this reflection. The research takes as major sources, beyond the movies, a book organized by Maricato herself, A produção capitalista da casa (e da cidade) no Brasil industrial, published in 1979. The work counts with a preface by Francisco de Oliveira and articles by Gabriel Bollaffi, Rodrigo Lefébvre, Nabil Bonduki and Raquel Rolnik. As counterpoints, the books São Paulo 1975: crescimento e pobreza - organized by Comissão de Justiça e Paz and elaborated by researchers connected to Centro Brasileiro de Planejamento (Cebrap), among those Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Paul Singer, Vinicius Caldeira Brant e Lucio Kowarik - and Quando a rua vira a casa - by Carlos Nelson Ferreira dos Santos and Arno Vogel, made into a documentary by Tetê de Moraes in 1980 - work as references for the comprehension of a forming debate, as a way to understand the role of the establishment of a critic body from the State of São Paulo in regards to the reflections from Rio de Janeiro.
