Abstract

This Master's thesis proposal introduces a study of the novels The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) by Oscar Wilde and Esther Waters (1894) by George Moore. Published at the end of the 19th century, a time in which England went through important political, economic, and social changes, we assume that the novels can be considered representative of the debate that was raging as a result of the questioning of Victorian values: what was the ideal literary object, and what was the best way to represent it? Once we study both novels together, we aim to investigate not only how the two authors conveyed the different aesthetics - especially Aestheticism and Naturalism - that flourished in France and England during the whirlwind that was the turn of the century, but we also intend to examine to what extent the intersection of the aesthetic and moral spheres could be understood as a problem at the end of the century by analysing the novels and their reception.
