Prevalence and characteristics of the use of emergency contraception in the city of São Paulo

Abstract

The most recent information on the prevalence of emergency contraception (EC) in childbearing age women was obtained in 2006. A population survey on contraceptive practices among 15 to 44-year-old women in the city of São Paulo was conducted since April to October 2015, and it was denominated "Contraceptive practices in the city of São Paulo: prevalence, unmet needs and SUS performance". In this project, 4.000 women living in São Paulo were interviewed. The questionnaire used was a synthesis of the instrument of the National Survey of Demography and Health of 2006. The data was obtained through interviews written on tablets. The responses were recorded in a database generated automatically by the software and transferred to another virtual database. The study was financed with FAPESP resources (Process 2014/50115-1). The project that we now propose consists on studying the data on the use of EC, in order to identify the prevalence of the use and the profile of the 1672 women who have ever used emergency oral hormonal contraceptive and SUS coverage in this provision. The data will be processed in SPSS and the statistical analysis will include proportional difference test and multivariate analysis. The granting of a scholarship for scientific initiation during a period of 12 months is requested. The project will be supervised by Profa. Tania Di Giacomo do Lago, also coordinator of the population survey.
