Abstract

The potential of some phosphate rocks to supply phosphorus (P) to crop plants has been as high as that of industrialised and more water-soluble phosphates, even when they show low water solubility. Different plant species show different abilities in the acquisition of P from phosphate rocks. Changes caused by their roots in characteristics and/or physical-chemical processes of the rhizosphere play a fundamental role in this acquisition. Addition of the biomass of these plants to the soil can quickly increase soil P availability, since a significant fraction of the total plant P is water-soluble and occurs as inorganic P (orthophosphate and pyrophosphate). Apart from that, the plant organic acids released during decomposition are capable of solubilizing phosphates present in the soil. The objective of this research project is to study the common bean plant acquisition of P that might be mobilised from phosphate rock by plants of buckwheat. The common bean, a species that do not present good ability to mobilise P, will be cultivated in a soil fertilised with biomass of buckwheat plants, which are well-known for their good ability to mobilising P from phosphate rocks. The buckwheat plant biomass to be used to fertilise soil will be produced in a soil to be fertilised with a phosphate rock. Plant of both species will be grown in tubes of PVC filled with soil and well-defined amounts of a natural source of P. It is expected that the results of this research can contribute to increase knowledge on the cycling and availability of P in the plant-soil system.
