Evaluation of the treadmill training guided by lactate concentration in Arabian Purebred horses

Abstract

Oriented training based on the physiological variable can improve physical conditioning and avoid injuries, in addition to relieve excessive efforts, in order to provide a healthier life, physically and mentally. Thus, this project intends to evaluate the treadmill training guided by lactate concentration established during progressive effort tests in Arabian Purebred Horses. This study will refer to ten Arabian Purebred horses, six castrated male and four female, whose ages vary between four and nine years old, with average weight of 380 kg, from the stud owned by the Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP (Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences University/State University of São Paulo), located in Jaboticabal's Campus. Sanitary measures will take place in order to guarantee the healthiness of the horses, which will initially get through an adaptation period to the treadmill in the Equine Sports Medicine Laboratory. After the acclimatization, when the horses are already able to walk, jog and gallop on the treadmill, they will undergo a Progressive Effort Test, preceded of induction of lactatemia by raising the speed of the treadmill to 10 m/sec and increasing the slope to 10% during two minutes. Returning the treadmill to the horizontal level and decreasing the speed to 1,7 m/sec, the horses will have two minutes to recover on this terms. The Progressive Effort Test itself will take place immediately after the recovery time by increasing the slope of the treadmill to 6% and raising the speed to 3.0 m/sec. This slope is going to be maintained up until the end of the Progressive Effort Test, and the speed is going to be gradually raised 0.5 m/sec each 800 meters reached until it gets to 7.5 m/sec. By the end of the Progressive Effort Test, the treadmill will return to the horizontal level and the cooling down fase will take place, by rearranging the speed to 3.4 m/sec for five minutes and, thereafter, to 1.7 m/sec for five minutes. During the Progressive Effort Test blood samples are going to be taken from the subjects in order to determine the lactate levels by means of hemogasometric tests and portable lactometer, which are going to be purchased posteriorly. The speed related to the minimum concentration of lactate established during the progressive effort test is going to be used as a basis for the six week training at treadmills. By the end of the training period, a new progressive effort test with the same specifications previously made is going to take place, in order to evaluate the improvements in physical conditioning. The determined lactate values are going to be submitted to Analysis of Variance and the average values related to the Tukey Test are going to be taken to aftermost discussion, report and publication.
