Abstract

The objective of this Project is to apply the electromagnetic field theories to analyze the behavior of the power frequency (50 or 60 Hz) electric fields in the vicinity of the overhead transmission lines. In this condition the electromagnetic field is quasi-static field and it is possible to separately consider the electric and magnetic fields and these fields can be considered as being electrostatic and magnetostatic fields. The electric field in the vicinity of an overhead transmission line will be calculated by using the Method of Images and the properties of the conductor materials. It will be calculated the electric fields in the vicinity of the typical overhead transmission lines of the Brazilian electric power system and the results obtained will be compared with limiting values recommended by the World Health Organization considered as being safety values to the human health. At the end of the project is expected that the application of the electrostatic field theories to calculate the electric field due to an overhead transmission line, that is a typical component of the electric system, increases the knowledge of the student about electrostatic field. This way, the student will be able to study more sophisticated field mapping techniques.
