Abstract

The use of living animals for didactic purposes is a frequent practice in teaching and research institutions. However, there are several objections to using this practice, whether for ethical or even humanitarian reasons. The objective of this study is to determine the anatomical viability of complete pig carcasses fixed in ethyl alcohol and preserved in 30% sodium chloride hypertonic solution at different times. It is expected that the said method of preservation of pig carcasses maintain the anatomical characteristics, so that they can be used for practical training of surgical techniques of the discipline of surgical technique of the Veterinary Medicine course of Faculty of Animal Science and Food Engineering of University of São Paulo.
