Abstract

The use of live animals for teaching purposes is an old practice that is still used in education and research institutions. However, there are several objections of using this practice, whether ethical or even humanitarian. The objective of this study is to define the anatomical availability of complete porcine carcass fixed in ethyl alcohol (AE) and preserved in 30% sodium chloride hypertonic solution (SHCS 30%). According to the method of porcine carcass preservation above, it is expected to maintain the anatomical characteristics so the porcine carcass can be used for practical training of surgical techniques of the discipline of Veterinary Medicine course of the University of Animal Science and Food Engineering of the University of São Paulo .Keywords: Substitutable method; Anatomical preservation; Animal welfare.
