Abstract

This research project aims to continue the analysis of the concept of totality in the work of Theodor W. Adorno, focusing on the issue on the antagonism between individual and social totality. Whereas in the dialectic of enlightenment (1947) the individual appears as an integral part of the whole, without opposing to it, from the 1950s, and especially in the 1960s, there is a more directed look at the contradictions between individual and society, which can be exemplarily observed in the negative dialectics (1966), through the concept of the non-identical. As we have shown in our master's research, which resulted in the dissertation entitled "The category of totality in the negative dialectic of Theodor W. Adorno", the mentions of the concept of totality always appear next to a conception of antagonism (such as in "the antagonistic whole" [Das antagonistische Ganze], "antagonistic society" [antagonistische Gesellschaft], among others). We intend to continue this research through an examination of Adorno's production the 1950s and 1960s, in which is noticeable the use of this conceptions of totality and antagonism in the critique of culture, society and also in the use of psychoanalysis.
