Abstract

Tipulomorpha is a diverse group of Diptera, but knowledge on its phylogeny is still much reduced. One of the difficulties of studying the phylogenetic patters of the group is that it is not possible to separate the problems of the phylogeny at family and subfamily levels, given that most of the subfamilies of the family Limoniidae are not monophylectic. The subfamily Chioneinae (the second largest subfamily of Limoniidae, with 4406 species within 59 genera) has never been properly studies from the phylogenetic point of view. Some of the synapomorphies suggested for the group (such as an expanded meron), were not yet tested within a broad study. This research project aims to propose a phylogenetic study of the entire Tipulomorpha based on morphological data, with emphasis in the subfamily Chioneinae. (AU)
