Identification of aldicarb in roadkill wild carnivores in highways in the state of São Paulo

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the economic sectors that contributes most to the Brazilian economy, being fundamental for socioeconomic development and for national and world food production. Thus, in order to maintain or even increase their productivity, rural farmers and ranchers make use of technological resources, such as roads and agricultural inputs, such as pesticides, making Brazil the largest consumer of agrochemicals in the world. In addition, Brazil is also at the top of another rank, it has the largest biodiversity of the world. This increases the risk of exposure of a wide variety of species of Brazilian fauna to toxic levels of pesticides. Thus, this research project seeks to identify the presence of aldicarb in biological samples of roadkill wild carnivores in two highways in the state of São Paulo. The cadavers will be submitted to necropsy, toxicological evaluation through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and subsequent hepatic histopathological evaluation of positive animals. We hope that the results of this project can contribute to the identification of this pesticide in wild carnivore species attacked by trampling and, thus, help in the elaboration of the current scenario of the presence of this substance in regions of the state of São Paulo.
