Abstract

This research analyzes the politics relative to the indigenous people in America, produced by the Spanish and Portuguese empires. The proposal is to study the Spanish and Portuguese measures during the first 200 years of colonization in America. A simultaneous focus on the two empires was chosen since many orientations over the indigenous people came from the Catholic Church and were common to both kingdoms. Besides, many events and systems present in many parts of America influenced and determined both the indigenous policies of Portugal and Spain. This mutual determination can be also perceived in the policies of the natives themselves, whose actions and modes influenced and were influenced by the European invaders' practices.
