Abstract

Exceptional preservation is a rare process in the fossil record. Even less common is the preservation of soft parts. Nevertheless, reports of highly preserved soft tissues associated with aluminosilicates are increasing. Despite the expanding interest in this topic, there is a lack of knowledge and comprehension about the mechanisms behind clay mineralization of fossils. In fact, the importance of clays effects during preservational processes has been claimed in experimental approaches. This project aims to investigate the fossilization pathways that led to high fidelity three-dimensional and two-dimensional preservation of macroscopic organisms and microbial mats in two different geological unities: Itajaí and Francevillian basins. We will follow a systemic approach, considering geobiological and geochemical aspects of the fossils, aiming to understand its diagenetic history by the means of a diverse array of techniques, such as SEM/EDS, SR-XRF, EMP, TEM, XRD and K-Ar and Ar-Ar dating of illite.
