Abstract

Industrial companies impact not only the environment, but also in different dimensions of human life. Wealth gap, depletion of natural resources, pollutant emissions, improper working conditions, etc. are just some examples of the negative impacts from industrial activity. In this context, sustainable development practices are gaining strength in the industrial scenario in terms of combining the protection of the environment and the human being with gain of competitive advantage on the market, increasing therefore its long-term survival probability. The alignment of sustainability with the integrated management systems (IMSs) has been, albeit timidly, approached in the scientific literature as a viable alternative to introduce socio-environmental actions effectively in organizations. The main objective of this proposal of Research Internship Abroad (BEPE) is to perform the international part of this fellowship holder's doctoral research in the Department of Business of the University of Barcelona, which includes the conduction of 4 case studies abroad and the starting of the elaboration of the guidelines for IMS to act as a developer of sustainability in industrial companies. If this BEPE proposal is approved it is expected to obtain the following results: to perform 2 case studies in Spain and 2 case studies in Portugal and, with this, critically analyze and confront the data from Brazilian, Spanish and Portuguese companies; to initiate the elaboration of the guidelines for alignment of IMS with sustainability; and to elaborate scientific articles on the partial and final results of the doctoral research.
