Abstract

This project aims in the synthesis and characterization of glasses in the boron-tungstate system containing rare earths. Glasses will be prepared using the well established melt-quenching technique. After chosen the most stable glass compositions presenting high rare earth contents, the samples will be treated thermally at temperatures experimentally determined in order to obtain transparent glass-ceramics. In a such way, we hope to obtain transparent glass-ceramics where the rare earth ion will be present in the crystalline phase. Both glasses and glass-ceramics will be characterized systematically, by means of thermal analysis, DSC, X-ray diffraction, Infrared, Raman and luminescence spectroscopes as well as Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning and electronic transmission microscopies.
