Abstract

Obesity and its associated complications have become a public health problem. One ofthe ways to fight obesity is bariatric surgery. Bariatric surgery has brought benefits to individuals'health, such as weight loss and decreased insulin resistance. However a severe bariatriccomplication is hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia. Although more commonly reported with gastricbypass in Y-roux, hypoglycemia was also observed in vertical gastrectomy, a procedureincreasingly employed in the USA. The prevalence of the symptom of hypoglycemia is reported in30% of the patients, in some cases until hospitalization was necessary. Metabolic studies show thatpatients with hypoglycemia after gastric surgery reveal profound changes in glycemic andhormonal patterns due to altered gastric anatomy. In addition recent studies have shown that theanalysis of the composition of the intestinal microbiome can be used to predict the glycemicresponse to food intake. Thus, the objective of this study is to evaluate individuals who arecurrently experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia and to determine whether the microbiomecomposition patterns are linked to glycemic pattern.
