Abstract

Aging is a crucial demographic process in our society since it affects the individuals' daily living. Many changes may be observed in the brains of elderly subjects, even among those without dementia symptoms. Those alterations may include amyloid deposition, a classic biomarker of Alzheimer's disease which may also be noted in a fraction of cognitively normal elderlies, and functional connectivity alterations between different brain areas, hence affecting the synchrony responsible for a well-functioning brain. At the present work, we chose two safe non-invasive neuroimaging methods to study the nature of said cerebral changes in healthy elderlies: respectively, positron emission tomography using the Pittsburgh Compound B as radioligand of the amyloid peptide and resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Based on a whole brain connectivity analysis, without delimiting a priori regions of interest, and on the amyloid profile of each subject, our study aims to stablish relations between the aforementioned neurobiological changes using the Partial Least Squares (PLS) method. We'll therefore be able to give a broader panorama on the elderly brain functioning, searching the etiology of the functional alterations observed in this population and correlations among their effects.
