Abstract

This research project aims to degrade the antibiotic ciprofloxacin by means of advanced oxidative electrochemical processes (PEOAs) using nanostructured materials in the production of gas diffusion electrodes (EDG) for hydrogen peroxide electrogeneration. The electron-generated H2O2 will be quantified by means of the UV-Visible absorption spectrophotommetry technique. Vulcan XC72 modified carbon EDG with cerium oxide nanorods will be produced to be combined with the boron doped diamond electrode (BDD) to be employed in the degradation of the drug in question. The degradation processes will be monitored by means of total organic carbon (TOC) analysis in order to determine the mineralization of the drug studied and by high performance liquid chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) to determine the mineralization route of the ciprofloxacin.
