Abstract

This work intends to develop Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (FRCC) formed by a hydraulic cementitious matrix based on Mg compounds and clinker-free, several aggregates incorporated along with discrete and discontinuous milliscopic and nanoscopic fibers. The innovation in this work relies on the production and characterization of FRCC following three principles: 1- To fully reinforce the composites only with lignocellulosic fibers of vegetable origin given their physico-chemical characteristics, which allow enormous economic advantages with respect to other types of mineral or synthetic fiber, at the same time becoming a CO2 sink from the natural encapsulation of this gas through photosynthesis that in turn is introduced into the construction material; 2- To obtain the cementitious matrix from hydraulic MgO compounds, drastically reducing the energy necessary to obtain the composite binder, in addition to avoiding the alkaline degradation of lignocellulosic fibers in the long term and 3- To enable the formation of carbonate products from Mg-based hydrates by the combination of the properties of both binder matrix and reinforcing elements, which would mean an improvement in the density of the matrix, together with the encapsulation of CO2 in hydrated magnesium hydroxicarbonates (HMHC).
