Abstract

Ventilatory processes are physiologically described through several variables that influence the acquisition of atmospheric O2. Tidal volume, breathing frequency, lung ventilation, and airway dimensions act mainly in the processes of moving external air to the respiratory epithelium, thus determining the amount of O2 that can be used by the organism. Traditional studies in comparative physiology have long shown how adjustments of these variables occur in relation to changes in body mass and, for some groups, have described patterns that show a functional relationship between these variables. Based on the great diversity of existing pulmonary morphologies, the present project seeks to analyze these relationships among respiratory variables of amniotes, through an extensive collection of data from the literature and complementation with data produced in the laboratory, looking for patterns in the adjustments according to the size of an organism in the various groups that make up the Amniota, and, for the first time, for different groups of reptiles. Through allometric methods, both traditional and phylogenetically corrected ones, we try to test the already well-established standards and create new ones for the poorly studied groups, as well as comparing the results obtained from the traditional regressions with those corrected phylogenetically.
