Abstract

The present proposal aims to a qualitative and quantitative analysis of documents, specifically, social defense event records (REDS) and police inquiries dealing with demands on religious intolerance in the State of Minas Gerais from 2013 to 2017. The objective of the project will be the identification of the construction of discourses on religious intolerance by the claimants, as well as the way of handling the demands by the justice system, looking at the difficulty of translating demands from social relations into the code of law. It is stressed that access to data, which is usually rare in the case of surveys, will be granted through a Technical Cooperation Agreement (TCT) signed between the Law Faculty of UFMG and the Secretariat of State for Human Rights, Social Participation and Citizenship (SEDPAC- Government of Minas Gerais). The methodology will be based on the technique of field research, using the procedures of the survey and bibliographic review; the collection of data from the Civil Police's information organs; and content analysis. The nature of the data will be mostly primary, as well as secondary data supporting the analysis. This is an interdisciplinary proposal, associating anthropology and law, which is justified in view of the insufficiency of studies on the legal treatment of religious intolerance, especially when it is asserted as one of the dimensions of racism. It is added that this is a research proposal linked to the Thematic Project "Religion, law and secularism: the reconfiguration of the civic repertoire in contemporary Brazil", dated 2015, directed by Paula Montero, and financed by Fapesp (nº 15/02497-5).
