Abstract

User Interface Design Patterns (UI Design Patterns) are a collection of user interface elements that are widely applied to the software development. The patterns represent a solution to a commonly occurring problem in user interface design. Each pattern contains a description or template for how to solve a problem that can be used in many different situations. The use of UI Design Pattern is frequently seen as a good practice in software engineering. However, when applying these patterns, the developer can end up introducing accessibility issues into the software. The objective of this project is to conduct an experimental study to evaluate a set of recommendations which guides developers on the use of UI Design Patterns for building mobile apps. These recommendations aim to mitigate the insertion of accessibility issues that can be caused by the use of UI Design Patterns. The recommendations were proposed in a master project that was completed in March 2018. However, they have not yet been evaluated from the developers' point of view. The evaluation will explore the developers' perception regarded to the recommendations from two perspectives: the perception of ease of use and utility of the recommendations. The experimental study will bring evidence about the acceptance of the recommendations and whether they should have refinements.
