Pregnancy planning in women with diabetes: an actual reality?

Abstract

Introduction: In Brazil and in the world, diabetes mellitus has been increasing over the years and leads to an increase of women in childbearing age with diabetes, leading to an increased risk in unplanned pregnancies. The problem of these pregnancies is the high risk of maternal and fetal complications in the short and long terms as a result of hyperglycemia and poor metabolic control. Thus, it is important that adequate guidance is given to women of childbearing age with diabetes for a well-planned pregnancy. However, despite existing recommendations on contraceptive education and counseling for these women, current studies still show few who plan their pregnancy adequately. And in Brazil, there are few studies that provide information about this planning.Objective: To examine if diabetic pregnants (types 1 or 2), in an outpatient care of Diabetes and Pregnancy at the Centro de Diabetes Mellitus (Diabetes Mellitus Center - DMC) of UNIFESP, have received adequate counselling about contraception and pregnancy planning.Methods: The sample of the study will be convenience, including pregnancy women with diabetes type 1 ou type 2 in an outpatient care at the Diabetes Mellitus and Pregnancy Ambulatory of the DMC, UNIFESP, aged over 18 years, in the period from October 2018 to July 2019. A standardized questionnaire will be applied with questions related to guidance on contraceptive use and pregnancy planning, and also data will be collected from participants' charts on glycemic control and pre-gestational.
