Abstract

The objective of the present study is to evaluate the feasibility of applying the 24HR method to collect dietary data by computerized and standardized platform - GloboDiet - in a cohort study. The application of two 24-hour dietary recall (24HR) through the GloboDiet software will be evaluated, being one face-to-face and the other by telephone, in the individuals who accepted to participate in the third wave of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) at the Clinical Research Center of Epidemiological study of São Paulo. The procedures for adhering to the study (re-markings and demarcations), average duration of the interviews, identification of the human and material resources needed to apply the method in the cohort, as well as the description of the flows and operational procedures that involve the pre- interview, interview and post-interview. At present, evidence is accumulating about the use of 24HR in epidemiological studies when the objective is to examine the association between diet as an independent variable and a dependent variable, usually a health outcome. However, the food frequency questionnaire has been hegemonic regarding the measurement of diet in epidemiological studies investigating this type of association. In this study, the 24-hour dietary recall will be used as a food consumption evaluation method, which results in a more accurate measurement in relation to the food frequency questionnaire, as well as offering greater detail of the food and allowing the investigation of other important characteristics of the diet of the individual. The results of the present study will be useful to demonstrate if the evaluation of food consumption through two applications of 24-hour dietary recall performed through GloboDiet interviews is feasible in the routine of a cohort study, demonstrating the advantages and disadvantages of their use. Therefore, if the feasibility of using this standardized and computerized tool is confirmed, this study will serve as a reference so that other researchers can replicate the steps and procedures described, as a roadmap. In addition, it is expected to publish the results in high impact journals and to develop a manual to evaluate food consumption in epidemiological studies using 24HR and GloboDiet, based on the experiences of the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil).
