Abstract After ingestion and metabolism, chemicals in the environment can be eliminated from the body unchanged and/or converted into metabolites, in urine, feces, sweat or even tears. Currently about more than 300 environmental chemicals or their metabolites are measured in human samples (e.g. urine, blood, serum, breast milk). Nevertheless, many of these substances or even their metabolites remain in the organism for long periods and have potential value as biomarkers. As such they can be examined in biological samples or when excreted into the environment, in environmental samples. In this research project, we intend to detect potential biomarkers of environmental exposure. The chosen substances are caffeine, cotinine, aflatoxin and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide (DEET), in biological and environmental matrices, such as blood, urine and wastewater, respectively, using MRM-profiling as an exploratory technique and to evaluate the potential of these substances as biomarkers.
