Abstract

Obesity is a frequent metabolic alteration in animals such as companions dog (pet) and increases the risk of breast neoplasms development and its malignancy grade. Obesity or overweight may have, as a consequence, local and systemic biological changes, such as inflammatory processes that accelerate and aggravate the cancer patient's condition. Studies in humans report that low levels of circulating vitamin D, considered an important antineoplastic factor, are predisposing factors to the development of neoplasms. But there is a data shortage in dogs. It is unknown if, as in humans, the fall of vitamin D predisposes to the neoplasm development, or if the endocrine changes resulting from the neoplasm reduce serum vitamin D, as observed in osteosarcoma in dogs. Thus, the present study has the objective of correlating body score, serum level of 25 (OH) D and cholesterol with the development of breast neoplasms in female dogs attended at the Veterinary Hospital of Unesp Jaboticabal. The animals selected will be divided into two groups, one group with 10 obese dogs without breast neoplasm (control group) and another group with 10 obese female dogs with breast neoplasm evaluated for body scoring. Firstly, there will be an interview with the tutors of the animals to evaluate the relationship between dog and tutor in the obesity development. Thereafter, dog health screening tests will be performed such as cardiographic, ultrasonographic and blood tests. Blood samples will be collected to measure the concentration of serum 25 (OH) D and cholesterol. And finally, female dogs with neoplasm will undergo mastectomy. The current research may contribute to the understanding of the correlation between body condition, blood levels of vitamin D and development of breast neoplasms in dogs.
