Abstract

Abrasives are considered strategic materials. Brazil consumes large amount of wheels per year, although its potential is even greater. The number and types of abrasive grit sizes available is quite large, with the number of possible composition, structures and shapes of hardness that can reach a large number of products to attend the needs of some specifically purpose. Due to technological interests involved in this area of abrasive manufacturing, little information is available to the community. The characterization experiments indicate the correlation between the material's properties and performance. Information obtained by experience and experiments serve as guides to the practice of engineering. The proposed project will be developed through the production and characterization by destructive and non-destructive mechanical tests of resinoid abrasive composites for abrasive materials. In order to study the effects of the amount of porosity and bonders present in the structure of these materials, the samples will be characterized using flexural, impact, impulse excitation technique and porosity tests by the Archimedes principle. It is expected that with preliminary results based on engineering concepts and materials will be possible, even indirectly, to determine the relationship of mechanical properties to the structure of resinoid abrasive materials, which which may be available to the community and will serve as the basis for studies of the abrasive composites formulated for application in grinding wheels.
