Abstract

The increasing demand for advanced materials combining unique and unusual properties has encouraged the study of new high entropy compounds, such as metallic oxides and High Entropy Alloys (HEA) containing more than four elements. The synthesis of these materials was stimulated by the advent of recent computational modeling techniques considering entropy during material design, which is a fundamental key to explain the stabilization of complex, multicomponent compounds of technological importance. The originality of these new materials is to combine the properties of the individual compounds with the thermodynamic stabilizing effect of the entropy. Therefore, the challenge of this proposal focuses on designing and synthetizing high entropy compounds at small scales, i.e., as thin and ultrathin films, as well as advancing in the elementary physical knowledge on this new type of materials. We expect to achieve these goals by using computational modeling and thermodynamic analysis, followed by the materials synthesis, characterization and understanding of the physical fundaments leading to the desired final properties. The team proposing this project has extensive experience in synthesis and characterization of thin films, including metallic oxides and nanostructured thin film alloys, which will allow us to start studying more complex systems of HEA containing elements such as Ti, Cr, Ni, C, Al, N, H. We emphasize that the study of HEA is a pioneer proposal in Brazil and it will allow us to reach a prominent place in the area of new materials, since they present important theoretical challenges in fundamental and experimental physical knowledge with application in several areas, such as Optical, Mechanical, tribological and special coatings.
