Abstract

Throughout more than 50 years of literary life, Machado de Assis made use of many and varied techniques of signature, pseudonym and anonymity in the different genres of writing he practiced: poems, short stories, chronicles, essays, letters, novels, prefaces - for their texts and texts by other authors - as well as contracts and dedications. The research proposed here intends to map the forms of signature, disguise or concealment of authorship applied by Machado de Assis, aiming to recognize possible methods and patterns of subscription, materialized in their various signatures, in spaces of authorship designation, and their relations with the different textual genres and different periods of the author's career. The research also seeks to understand the meaning effects of the different signatures on his work and on the attribution of authorship and responsibility of his texts. (AU)
