Abstract

The use of cutting fluids in machining having as goal the cutting tool cooling is extremely important for longer tool life and better workpiece surface finishing. Nowadays, there is a great number of cutting fluid types being sold, but there is no sufficient information in academic and technical literature for selecting the correct cutting fluid to one specific machining operation based in the cutting fluid physical/chemical proprieties. The lack of information is due to the poor knowledge about what properties the cutting fluid must present to optimize the operation performance. This study look for understand one of the most important cutting fluid characteristics responsible by its cooling capacity: Leidenfrost's point. It represents the limit between transition boiling and the film boiling. From this point several cutting fluid specimens can be classified using different concentrations. So, the evaluation about how the film boiling affect the cooling capacity or if the steam layers with different heat flux coefficients can have significant impact on cooling curve can be conducted.
