Abstract

The project deals with a detailed analysis of the nature, characteristics, dynamics and evolution of Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurship (KIE) and Knowledge-Intensive Firms (KIF) and their innovative activities within a specific innovation system. The analysis relies on a Schumpeterian approach towards endogenous economic growth. In this vein and in order to investigate the role of Knowledge-Intensive Entrepreneurship (KIE) in innovativeness and subsequently economic growth, the study investigates the interactions of knowledge-intensive enterprises with other related elements such as other firms and entities in different sectoral systems, university and research institutions, and government (public authorities) in the economy. The research respectively focuses on Brazil and more specifically on the State of São Paolo as the national and local representatives for innovation systems. Moreover, the research addresses the mutual relationship between entrepreneurship and the society with respect to customs, culture, and institutions. After all, the mechanisms and channels through which entrepreneurship and in specific knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship influence the economic growth and social welfare are investigated. Regarding the results, the proposed research maps and illustrates the network and innovation system in which the KIE interacts with other relevant elements in the economy. In addition, the research investigates the role and contribution of KIE in social context and economic growth. Finally, the study has the potential and possibility to be directed and extended at the policy level by focusing on impact evaluation of public innovation policy (or policies) targeting innovative activities carried out by knowledge-intensive entrepreneurship.
