Abstract

The bacteria Xanthomonas albilineans infects sugarcane causing leaf scald disease, which can result in total loss of infected crop. Its well-known strains show intraspecific differences in severity of the disease, but the causes of this variation are not completely elucidated. Studies with strains from various locations of the world show higher colonization of the aerial parts of the plants may be related to severity of the disease. Therefore, we propose in vitro growth studies with four isolates from São Paulo state, two aggressive and two less aggressive. Additionally, will be used variations on carbon source and addition of sugarcane macerate, in order to evaluate the response in growth rate. It's also proposed combined growth analyses to detect a possible interaction between the isolates. To do so, will be constructed and inserted vectors with fluorescent markers to differentiate the isolates. The development of this project will add to the knowledge of the biology of the bacteria and its possible relationship with the aggressiveness of the disease.
