Abstract

Non-pharmacological treatments of asthma have been used to improve clinical control in asthmatic patients. Respiratory and aerobic exercises have been the most studied treatments in isolation, but it is unknown until the present moment a study that associates the two treatments. Objective: To evaluate the effect of the association of aerobic and respiratory exercises on the clinical control of asthma in patients with moderate to severe persistent asthma. Methods: 38 asthmatic adults randomly divided into two groups: aerobic + placebo (GAP) and aerobic + respiratory (GAR) will be studied. The training program will last for three months and be held for 20 sessions, twice a week, lasting 70 minutes each session. All patients will be evaluated before and after the intervention regarding clinical control of asthma, quality of life in asthma, symptom diary and thoracoabdominal kinematics by optoelectronic plethysmograph (OEP). The sample number was calculated from symptom-free days, with the test power of 90%, significance level of 5% and considering a loss of 20%, totaling 38 patients. For the statistical treatment of analyzed data sets, variables with normal distribution will be analyzed at different intergroup and intra-group moments by analysis of variance (ANOVA) of two factors for repeated measures, followed by the Student-Newman-Keuls post-hoc test to identify possible differences groups and/or over time and test t for comparisons between delta. The level of significance will be adjusted to 5% (p <0.05) for all tests. (AU)
