Abstract Parkinson's disease (PD) is an inexact cause of illness that causes cell death in the substantia nigra triggering motor symptoms such as tremor of rest, bradykinesia, motor rigidity and changes in gait. The advancement of the disease tends to make the drug treatment inefficient, and neurosurgery for the implantation of deep brain stimulation electrodes is the main intervention to soften the motor symptoms. The need for electrophysiological monitoring for the accurate deposition of the electrodes has opened up an important perspective for obtaining electrophysiological data for the study of PD, both by recording local field potentials (LFPs) as also by recording action potentials (spikes) in several structures of the basal ganglia, especially the subthalamic nucleus (STN). This scientific initiation project aims to identify the spectral differences in the LFP records of the motor portion of the STN of both cerebral hemispheres of Parkinsonian patients during the surgery for bilateral implant of electrodes for deep brain electrical stimulation. The aim of this study is to possibile unveil the correlation of the symptomatic asymmetries of the patients with the electrophysiological records of the contralateral STNs and their respective coefficients in frequency in the alpha and beta rhythms. This set of analyzes stands out for allowing comparisons and statistical analyzes in the intra-subject scenario. As a long-term objective, the work may contribute to the establishment of biomarkers of PD with potential relation with possible subtypes of the disease | |
