Abstract

Recent studies concluded that there is a pressing need to implement strategies to improve Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in nurseries/primary schools. Hence, providing schools with tools to measure/alert air pollutants' levels to make them self-sufficient to reduce Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) is vital and enables the mitigation of related health impacts. So, the use of low-cost sensors arise as a new strategic tool to measure IAQ in schools. As far as known, there are no publications on IAQ assessment using low-cost sensors on nurseries/primary schools. Thus, this project aims to develop tools to help schools to reduce IAP and assess its effective reduction and of its impact on childhood Asthma. It is expected to: 1) validate and calibrate low-cost sensors for IAQ monitoring providing schools with tools to effectively reduce IAP; 2) develop IAP exposure models; and 3) assess the impact of IAP reduction on childhood Asthma as well as provide an early Asthma diagnosis (children > 3 years).
