Abstract

In this work, the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CDRR) will be investigated in CO2 saturated KHCO3 solutions in Fe/C-N electrocatalysts, which correspond to Fe-containing nitrogen-doped carbon materials prepared by heat treatment of carbon impregnated with several proportions of a Fe-C-N complex, such as Fe[2,4-Tris (2-pyridyl) -1,3,5-triazine]22+ (Fe[TPTZ22+]), to give materials with different Fe contents (1 to 10 wt.%). It is expected to obtain homogeneously distributed Fe nanoparticles in the final material, so that the work must also involve the investigation of the variables involved in the preparation procedure of the catalyst, as well as their detailed characterization. Characterization techniques will comprise x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron (SEM) and transmission (TEM) microscopies, x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical studies will comprise experiments of cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis. These studies will be completed CDRR effluent analysis by on line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (on line DEMS) and by gas chromatography analyses, which will be essential to identify and quantify the products formed in the electrode reactions and thus for establishing the faradic yield of the CDRR occurring in the different catalytic materials.
