Abstract

A large percentage of Brazilian pastures are infested by weeds, of which grasses are the most difficult to handle due to morpho-physiological similarities with forage species. Studies on the density of Paspalum virgatum and the period of coexistence of the weed with the pasture-forming species are important to guide the producer in the decision to control the weed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of forage species Urochloa brizantha, Panicum maximum and Cynodon spp., coexistence with Paspalum virgatum to determine the critical density of weed populations. Two experiments will be carried out at the Laboratory of Weeds - LAPDA, from FCAV-UNESP. The first experiment will be plant density and the second will be the coexistence period of the plants. For both experiments, the seeds of Paspalum virgatum, Urochloa brizantha, Panicum maximum and Cynodon spp. will be seeded in trays for the formation of seedlings and evaluations of plant height and diameter, total chlorophyll content and dry mass will be made. In the second experiment the determination of the macronutrient contents in the leaves and also of the crude protein content will be done. The experimental designs for the two experiments will be in randomized blocks with five replicates. The data obtained in both experiments will be submitted to analysis of variance, using the F test and performed the means tests, after which, the data regression analysis will be done.
