Abstract

The use of Kraft lignin in the development of polyurethanes (PU) has been widely explored in recent decades. Modification and optimization routes of lignin structure at high temperatures and pressure, such as oxypropylation, were established in the 1980s. Recently, milder synthesis conditions have been reported by reacting lignin with propylene carbonate or even with Propylene Oxide (OP). In general, polyols from oxypropylated lignin have been widely used in the development of rigid PU foams, but the application of this type of polyol as adhesives is still scarce. The amount of PU information from lignin modified by the reaction with propylene carbonate is even lower, so far no work has reported the obtainment of PU from this polyol. In the case of thermoactivated PU adhesives, there are no studies reported in the literature that use lignin, modified or unmodified, as a polyol. Therefore, this work proposes the modification of lignin by the two routes mentioned above aiming at the synthesis of thermoactivated polyurethane adhesives via a new experimental approach based on the dissociation equilibrium of impeded urea groups. The objective is to obtain polyols with controlled, optimized, and reproducible structures, capable of being developed under mild conditions of synthesis. The properties of the polyols obtained through each modification route will be compared, as well as the properties of the polyurethane adhesives synthesized from them. An innovative technique for characterizing phase transitions, Temperature Modulated Optical Refractometry (TMOR), will be applied in the investigation of the curing kinetics of adhesives, as well as in the establishment of a relationship between the molecular organization of these polymers and their macroscopic properties. This objective will be achieved by combining TMOR with techniques such as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), dielectric spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), mechanical and adhesive tests and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
