Abstract

The interest in floating offshore wind turbines for deep water applications has been intensified due to the limitations of bottom fixed structures. A primary challenge for such devices relies on the complex dynamics regarding the coupling between the hydrodynamics of the floating structure and the aerodynamics of the wind turbine. To obtain a reliable estimation, this work proposes a detailed computational fluid dynamic model, which will be used to understand the physics and validate simplified models. Subsequently, the modeling of a group of wind turbines is aimed to be performed to evaluate the influence of wakes on the dynamics of the turbines. In addition, this work intends to investigate the effect of the control system to increase the overall group efficiency and minimize the cost of energy produced. (AU)
