Abstract

The use of biological membranes in surgeries is a reality for years, as bovine, equine and swine pericardium, fascia lata, amniotic membrane, submucous layer of dog´ small intestine, among other ones. One of the most used is the bovine pericardium, which is so much applied in cardiovascular, thoracic and urologic surgeries besides implants for tissue reconstruction. The purpose of this research is to describe the biomechanical resistance of the bovine pericardium, by using two directions of collection, one parallel to the longitudinal heart axis and one perpendicular. Twenty pericardium from adult bovines will be tested, from which will be collected 4 samples in each direction for every pericardium. On phase 2, eight more pericardium sacs will be applied for conservation during 4 months in a 98% glycerin solution and monthly analyses will be taken by using the direction of collection with greater biomechanical resistance determined on phase 1. It´s expected to be determined the bovine pericardium resistance in two directions od collection, what is really useful in surgeries that apply this biological membrane, besides providing the effect of glycerin through 4 months on this kind of tissue.
